Bays Out To Stop Technical’s Six Season Long Run In English Cup

Ferrymead Bays will be out to halt Cashmere Technical’s six season long winning run in the Morrison Mitsubishi English Cup when the two sides meet in the Final at English Park at 3pm on Saturday. Technical are looking to make it seven wins in the cup, and sixth on the bounce in the historic trophy, first contested in 1913, with Bays out to make it five cup wins and their first since 2016.

The two finalists have already had three close games this season, with Technicial needing extra time to advance past their neighbours 2 – 1 in the Chatham Cup. In the opening round of the Southern League, Bays when down 2 – 0 with the contest a lot closer than the final score may suggest, with the reverse clash seeing the two sides playing out very even encounter with Technical having to come from behind to secure a 1 – 1 draw. The last time the two sides were drawn together in the cup was in the opening round in 2015 with Technical winning 3 – 1. Since 2017 the Most Value Player of the final will be awarded the Steve Summer Medal. in 2017.

The English Cup was donated by Robert English, former president of the Canterbury Football Association - 1911 to 1928, who was largely responsible for the acquisition of the land for what was to become English Park, the name given by the CFA to honour all work of Mr English for the game in Canterbury. Sydenham lifted the trophy in the inaugural final, after they defeated Burnham Camp, with a replay needed to find the winners. Twenty-five different clubs have had their names engraved on the cup at least once, with Western having the most success with 23 wins.

'Old and New' Square Off For Southern League Playoffs

It was a case of the 'old' - Roslyn Wakari and the 'new' - FC Twenty 11, the respectiive nominations of the Football South and Mainland Federations to contest the 2nd leg playoffs, with the winner then eligible for promotion to the Southern League, subject to achieving a Club Licence and any other requirements as required by New Zealand Football. The 1st leg will be played on Saturday at Avonhead Park, with a Midday kickoff with the 2nd leg at Ellis Park at 12:30pm on the 17 September.  

Roslyn, who along with follow Dunedin club, Northern are the oldest clubs in the South Island, both formed 1888, with FC formed in 2011 after the merger between the Avon and Burnside clubs. Both have had success in the 'old' Southern League - played from 1968 until 1999, with Roslyn champions in 1992, 1993 and 1994 with Burnside going back-to-back in 1989 / 1990.

Roslyn's coach, Terry Boylan, who was a player at the club when they won the league, says that the whole club is looking forward to the playoffs missing out on a place in the Southern League this season. 

"The players know it will be two big games, but they are looking forward to the challenge, it will be just the same for FC", said Boylan.

Away goals DO NOT count as double with the aggregate score over both legs used to determine the winner. If the aggregate score is equal at the end of normal time in the 2nd leg when extra time will be played and if it is still a draw, after extra time then penalties will be used to determine the winner.
